Spring cleaning sounds simple in theory—but deciding what to keep, store, or part with can quickly become overwhelming. And while many Related buildings offer convenient on-site storage amenities, you may find your needs go beyond what’s available. We spoke with the Space team to get their top tips for simplifying your spring cleaning.

How Space Simplifies Spring Cleaning

Decluttering and storing items during a spring clean can feel intimidating—even for the most organized person. So, how can Space’s services help streamline the process? “We simplify the process by providing a digital and physical off-ramp for the stuff you don’t use every day but aren't ready to part with,” Mark Emerick, president of Space, tells us.

Space’s Tips for Spring Cleaning and Deciding What to Store

When it comes to spring cleaning and deciding what makes the cut for storage, the Space team recommends the “Utility vs. Sentiment” audit. “High-end urban living is about maximizing your immediate environment for the life you’re living now,” says Emerick. “If an item hasn't provided functional utility in the last 90 days—think heavy winter coats, bulky ski gear, or that stand mixer you only use for holiday baking—it shouldn’t be taking up premium space in your home. It belongs in your external square footage.”

Emerick recommends keeping these spring cleaning tips in mind: 

  • The Rule of 3: Keep what you use daily; move what you use seasonally to your external square footage; and archive what you only need for the future.
  • The Apartment Test: Look at the items in your closets and ask: “If I had to pay rent specifically for the square footage this item occupies, would it justify the cost?” If the answer is no, move it into your Space personalized digital inventory. It’s the most efficient way to give yourself an apartment “upgrade” without the move-out day.
Don’t Make These Common Spring Cleaning Mistakes

There are a few reasons why spring cleaning often feels like it hasn’t worked for you in the past. “The biggest mistake is ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’ Amnesia,” Emerick says. “People shove things into traditional storage units or deep closets and literally forget they exist, turning an asset into a liability.”

Emerick tells us these are the three biggest mistakes people make when it comes to spring cleaning:

  1. The Black Box. Storing items without a digital inventory. If you can’t see it on your phone, you don't own it—it owns you.
  2. Poor Curation. Storing “trash” alongside “treasure.” Spring cleaning should be an edit, not just a relocation.
  3. Ignoring Accessibility. People store seasonal items so deeply that retrieving them becomes a chore. With the Space app, your items are always “on-call,”  making the transition between seasons as easy as a software update.
