Designer & Related Resident Helena Wang on New York Fashion Week, Healing Intention in Clothing, and Spring in NYC

March 20, 2026
Culture New York City

Related resident and New York City native Helena Wang recently debuted her namesake brand at New York Fashion Week. Wang’s NYC influence is rooted in her time at Parsons School of Design and Columbia University, and is reinforced by her commitment to producing every piece in the city’s Garment District using high-quality fabrics from around the world. The emerging designer stands out for her use of sustainable production, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and innovative textiles like rose fiber.

We spoke with Wang to hear more about how New York City shapes her work, what she loves about NYC in the spring, and the inspiration behind her Rose Fiber Scarf, which features 100 roses.

You were born and raised in New York City. How has growing up here shaped your perspective as a designer?

HELENA WANG: New York is a magical place in the sense that it’s a true melting pot and global epicenter of cultures. Growing up here, I always felt like a citizen of the world, like I belonged to multiple cultures at once. My design reflects that global, multicultural identity.

What is your favorite thing about New York in the spring, and does that seasonal shift influence your collections?

HW: My favorite thing about New York in the spring is seeing how everyone is just happier. In Chinese culture, spring represents the real start of the year. While my collections are designed to be versatile and timeless across seasons, spring is the moment when people feel excited to wear beautiful pieces again.

You recently debuted your namesake brand during New York Fashion Week. What did that moment mean to you, personally and professionally?

HW: I’ve worked my entire life toward building this brand. I intentionally curated every educational and career decision to prepare for this moment, so debuting during New York Fashion Week was a dream come true.

Your work has been recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America(CFDA). How did that recognition impact your journey?

HW: When I graduated from Parsons with my BFA in Fashion Design, I was recognized as a CFDA Fashion Future Graduate. As a creative, much of what I do comes from intrinsic joy, but receiving that recognition further solidified my north star of starting my own brand as I continued my graduate studies at Columbia.

You approach clothing as a form of care. What does that philosophy look like in practice when you’re designing a piece?

HW: When I begin designing, I start with problems. I ask people around me about the issues they experience with their garments—anything that frustrates them or doesn’t serve their daily lives.

From there, I choose materials that are healthy for the skin, such as silk, linen, tencel, and rose fiber. I also incorporate healing intention through details inspired by acupressure, comfortable yet flattering silhouettes, and local sustainable production.

Many of your designs are inspired by Asian healing philosophies. Can you share how those traditions influence your silhouettes, materials, or overall aesthetic?

HW: I draw inspiration from Asian healing philosophies both functionally and conceptually. For example, I developed a patented design using pearls to target acupressure points on the body, referencing Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Philosophically, my work is influenced by Daoist and Buddhist ideas, particularly the appreciation of beauty in imperfection. You’ll see asymmetry throughout my designs, along with intentional “fractures” that are highlighted with pearls, lace, or pleating. These details are a form of visual poetry, a way of honoring vulnerability and the marks we carry. What is often perceived as imperfect is what makes us most human and most beautiful.

All of your garments are sewn in the NYC Garment District. Why was it important to you to keep production local?

HW: I’m in this game for the long run, so reputation and quality are my priorities. Producing in New York allows me to maintain the highest level of quality and craftsmanship. Being close to production means I can oversee every detail of the garment and ensure it meets the standards I set for the brand. I personally inspect every detail down to the thread.

Your patented Rose Fiber Scarf is woven from 100 roses. What sparked the idea for this piece, and what does it represent to you?

HW: The idea came after I formed a partnership with the mill that holds the patent for producing fabric from roses. The hopeless romantic in me thought it would be beautiful if each scarf represented exactly 100 roses.

It took two years to perfect the texture, color, and flow of the design. Seeing clients gift it to their loved ones has been incredibly meaningful. It’s so beautiful to witness love as part of my job, and it’s a privilege I don’t take for granted.

What’s one spring trend you’re loving right now and how would you style it for life in New York City?

HW: I don’t believe in trends; I believe people should dress for their own identity and wear silhouettes that flatter their natural body shape.

If I had to choose a trend I gravitate toward, it would be a colorful monochrome. It’s timeless, chic, and always so New York. I often style my monochrome look with the Pearl Kimono and Half Pleat Trousers in a shade I call “silver pink.” This color was so rare that no existing elastic thread matched it, so I ended up dyeing the thread myself in my kitchen for days.

What’s your ideal spring day in New York, from morning to evening?

HW: My perfect spring day in New York starts with waking up naturally, followed by a run along the Hudson River. After exercise, I always love a relaxing sauna and shower. I’d then brunch with the girls, host tea time for my clients, and end the day with an outdoor date night.
